Jahr des Lichts Logo

The United Nations proclaimed 2015 as International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). Focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, the UN has recognized the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health. Light plays a vital role in our daily lives, it has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.

The Explorado Children's Museum is participating in the Year of Light with his "hands-on, minds-on and hearts-on" concept. Every month we explain children playfully the diversity and importance of light with the help of a new interactive exhibit on light and various workshops.

Light Workshop

Children make light. Supported by the association "Kind und Kultur Duisburg e.V." children can create their own creative lamps in an open workshop. The produced light exhibits by the children will be shown and shine in the Explorado Bistro.

Jahr des Lichts

In March our visitors need a lot of power for our new light exhibit. With the help of motion energy you can illuminate a dark skyscraper floor by floor.

The Magic Case

The magic case contains invisible light, but still can show our visitors what is not visible otherwise. UV light, or black light, can not be seen as easily as "normal light". Using a fluorescent test lotion little scientists can experiment with the black light case and find out the importance of hygiene and proper hand washing.

Colourful Shadow World

Using the new light exhibit, children transform their shadows into a colorful work of art. Three lamps in the colours red, green and blue will light a white wall. But why shine the shadows in many different colours? Come to the second floor and discover the secret of the coloured shadows.

Bluebox Explorado Duisburg

In June all visitors can move with the speed of light to the most diverse places: under the bright starry sky, to the warm sand experiencing a sunset or at the sparkling campfire. Find out what your favourite moments of light are!

Frozen Shadows

We know: Without light, there is no shadow. But only at the Explorado you can jump over your shadow. For this purpose, it will flash and on the wall a curious picture will appear. Is this shadow familiar to you? Almost a minute the frozen shadow stays with you and you have time to try a new pose.

Solar Table

In August, we invite children of all ages at our solar table. With the help of light impinging onto small solar cells, small objects can be set in motion. Here children learn a form of energy that protects the climate - because using the power generated by light no environmentally harmful CO2 gets into the air.

Light Sculpture

Light with a difference: Build with LED Tetris stones your own lamp! The different modules can be put together in countless variations. Not only for fans of the classic game a pure joy! The light exhibit can be found on the 1st floor of the museum.
